In Florida’s Big Bend area, hunters can target a diverse range of duck species due to the region’s mix of freshwater marshes, coastal estuaries, and shallow bays. Common duck species include:
- Mottled Duck – A resident species often found in freshwater marshes and coastal wetlands.
- Blue-Winged Teal – Common during migration, especially in early hunting season.
- Green-Winged Teal – Smaller, fast-flying ducks that arrive later in the season.
- Northern Pintail – Known for their elegance and long tails, they are often found in coastal and marshy areas.
- Redhead – A diving duck commonly seen in coastal waters and bays.
- Canvasback – Another diving species found in deeper marshes and coastal areas.
- Ring-Necked Duck – Frequently spotted in freshwater ponds and marshes.
- Scaup (Lesser and Greater) – Also called bluebills, they are common in open water and bays.
- Gadwall – Found in both coastal and freshwater marshes.
- Mallard – Although less common in Florida than other areas, some can be found in the Big Bend.
- Wigeon – Prefers coastal marshes and wetlands.
These species offer a variety of hunting opportunities, from fast-flying teal in shallow marshes to diving ducks in open bays, making the Big Bend area a prime location for duck hunters.
